Writer Sultan Pepper Dies Unexpectedly

Sad news to report:

Comedy writer Sultan Pepper, 47, who won an Emmy in 1993 for her work on The Ben Stiller Show, passed away on October 20. She was the sole female writer on the Stiller series, and later went on to write and produce for a number of other shows, including Blind Date, Street Smarts and Don’t Forget Your Toothbrush. She was on the writing team for Mad TV‘s 2004 and 2005 seasons, during which the show was nominated for recognition by the Writers Guild of America.

A number of years ago, she sent me a nice note with her bio updates:

While on the “Stiller” staff, Sultan wrote the “90210″ parodies as well as some of the “MTV” parodies. However, her most potent contribution to the show might have been adding just a smidgen of female energy to the staff’s magnificently engorged “men-ergy”.

Since “Stiller” Sultan has continued to work in sketch, late night t.v, and animation. Most recently she developed a show with Moon Zappa for MTV, wrote a prime time animated pilot — “The New Wonder Twins” for Warner Brothers, and co-produced “Don’t Forget Your Toothbrush” for Comedy Central.

Her obituary was published in the Los Angeles Times on October 25, and unfortunately went unseen until today. The news has since been picked up by media outlets, including The Hollywood Reporter.

She is survived by her parents, Teresa and Jack Pepper.

Please feel free to leave your note of condolence in the comments below.
